My data recovery program has started to recover files. Can you believe it? It took two whole weeks for R-Studio to index the contents of my MP3 drive. This 200GB drive got nadgered by a nice combination of travelling to work on my back every day and being used in combination with Windows XP Pro SP2 and hibernation. Just as well I didn’t keep anything on there that was of immediate importance…

James Auger in his controversial new book, Augmented Animals, envisions animals, birds, reptiles and even fish using specially engineered gadgets to help them overcome their evolutionary shortcomings. He imagines rodents zooming around with night-vision survival goggles, squirrels hoarding nuts using GPS locators and fish armed with metal…
This reminds me so much of Ben Bova’s Uplift War, that it’s funny. I don’t think its an inherently evil idea, unlike those who believe that the word ‘natural’ should be in capitals. I do think that this is a plagiarised idea – I’m not sure if it was Bova’s idea in the first place. If not him then who?
I would have thought that before people performed frivolous augmentation research (adding night-vision goggles to squirrels for gods sake), they might look to genetics to perform some fundamental enhancements to the cognitive capabilities of an animal.
They might also want to think about performing some serious research into growing two dicks on a tiger, so i don’t have to have so many migraines.
I’m thinking of getting myself a new machine. If it was you and you were going to buy a tablet PC… which would it be?
And if it was a plain old laptop (desktop replacement)?
And workstation?

Somehow, my Samsung laser printer went missing while we were traveling. Doubtless it will be one of those situations I get myself into where I savagely accuse a waiter of over-charging or under-changing me, only to find that I have had too much to drink and can’t count. Or to put it another way, it’s in a box somewhere. Anyway – to hell with all that!! I’m gonna git me some o’ dat super-groovy, pict-bridge, multi-card reading, printing, scanning, copying, OCRing, contact sheet printing multi-function, picture-editing action. And I’m gonna git me dat in about half an hour ago.
Yep I got one! An HP PSC 2355 All-in-one Printer, Scanner, Copier. Can’t wait to get home.
My favourite feature is the multichoice contact sheet feature. You print it out, then mark in the tick boxes what pictures you like. You then scan the contact sheet back in. It checks what you selected, and prints them at high quality for you. Another great feature is that it creates a DPOF from your annotated contact sheet. That’s a Digital Print Order Format file, that it writes onto you memory card. You then just give the card to the photo-lab and they print what you selected on the contact sheet! That sounds seamless!
