A good book is Chris's Date's Introduction to Database Systems. It is in there that he exposed in detail the foundations of Relational Theory. Your discussion on closure is very important in Relational Theory. The sad fact is that none of today's popular SQL-based databases are truly Relational and thus are not consistent insofar as they do not adhere to strict, rigid, and precise mathematical principles!

Posts like this should be read by any developer, even if he/she is not really interested in mathematics. After all, the whole of computing, and perhaps natural science in general, is just an offset of mathematics

Really, really great article. The kind of post that every time you read it, you catch something you missed before. Worth printing out and saving in the front pocket of my backpack.

Sending out to all my friends as well.

Keep'em coming...

Hi John,
thanks for the tip. I found the research for this post a LOT more entertaining than writing the post.

So, Alfred North Whitehead - does he work for Microsoft?
(joke)

I only (kinda) read one book by him - Principia Mathematica. I gave up pretty quickly after discovering Godel's theorem... Can't say it was the most engrossing work of fiction I ever read. ;-)

Hey - got halfway in, decided it was too late and saved the remainder. Will definitely require another read but this reminds me of an email conversation and the subsequent reading (small amount) I did on set theory so far :) More comments later.
